Press Release: Arrest of 29 Sunni Arab Citizens in Night Raids in Ahwaz

On Wednesday night, June 17, 2026 (27 Khordad 1405), forces from the Intelligence Ministry raided the homes of Arab citizens in the Kut Abdullah district of Ahwaz, arresting 29 Sunni Arab citizens. According to human rights reports, these arrests were carried out solely on the basis of their religious affiliation with Sunni Islam.
Human rights activists reported that a number of the detainees had previously served prison sentences for peaceful religious activities and had already completed their terms. Security forces stormed the residences, instilling fear and panic among children and families, confiscated personal belongings, and transferred the detainees to an undisclosed location.

Identities of some of the verified detainees:

Hussein Batrani, 40 years old, married
Hassan Obeidawi, 50 years old, married
Mohammad (Abu Aqeel) Hazbavi, 36 years old, married
Abdulrahman Mohammad Hazbavi, 43 years old, married
Jassim (Abu Majid) Sawari, 34 years old, married
Mohammad Khanfari, 22 years old, married
Mohammad Hazbavi, 21 years old, single

This action is a clear example of double repression against Arab citizens. Arbitrary arrests, night raids, and enforced disappearances constitute blatant violations of fundamental human rights, including freedom of religion, personal security, and the right to a fair trial.
